July 2026
The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett
Rating: 4 Stars
🟊🟊🟊🟊

This novel is available for free on Hoopla. I listened to the audiobook, which was entirely too long but beautifully narrated. I was debating between 3.5 and 4 stars, but I will say 4 stars due to the narration.
I have never read or watched "The Help." I chose this book because I saw Oprah post about it on Instagram. It was not what I expected, but I went through a range of emotions listening. I was uncomfortable, sad, entertained, angry, disgusted, amused, maybe even a little inspired?
I heard this book may be turned into a movie, but I hope it is turned into a series instead so there's time to explore all of the numerous characters and serious issues. Instead of focusing just on Meg and Birdie's perspectives, I'd love to watch a show tell the stories of all of the characters.
Overall, I doubt I'd read this book again, but I give Kathryn Stockett credit for her storytelling-- and even more credit to voice actors January LaVoy and Jenna Lamia for their narration!
I did not choose this as July's main book club pick due to the length.
Note: This novel contains many sensitive topics and explicit language. Readers may wish to check trigger warnings, which may contain spoilers. As always, discretion is up to the reader.

June 2026 Book Club Pick:
Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke
Rating: 3.5 Stars
🟊🟊🟊⯨

I listened to the audiobook, thanks to a free Audible credit.
I was intrigued by the concept of this book but found myself becoming distracted in the middle and disappointed in the ending. The twist was an interesting idea and could have resulted in a better ending with a few changes. Yesteryear is worth listening to, especially if you're looking for a book club pick that will spark discussion. I look forward to diving into the themes, characters, twist and ending on book club night. It is not a book I'll read again, but it is one I'll enjoy discussing.
Note: This book has severe profanity, graphic content, and sensitive subject matters that may upset or offend some readers. As always, discretion is up to the reader.
